Celebrating City Women | The Billingsgate Fishwives

The Billingsgate Fishwives could be described as the Carrie Bradshaws of their day - they drank, they smoked, they spent their own money on whatever they wanted to spend it on and retained their independence from men.

Over the centuries the Fishwives survived plagues, civil wars and fires but one thing they couldn’t survive was the Victorians. Laura Miller tells us about the history of the Billingsgate Fishwives and how She was reinvented to fit Victorian gender stereotypes.
